A tour around the Tokyo Islands

In the Tokyo Islands-chain, there are islands other than Oshima, Niijima and Hachijojima.

South of Oshima is the island of Toshima, which is a small island with a perimeter of just 8 km. In essence, the entire island is itself a volcano, giving it a beautifully unique shape with very few level surfaces and sharp seaside cliffs.

But even in such conditions the locals have built a thriving town on the slopes of the mountains, and you can feel the hustle and bustle of people.

Our recommended activity at Toshima is the dolphin swim.

On this island, you are able to swim with the dolphins that have made the island their home. You can join this with some scuba diving, making for a rare place where you can dolphin swim and scuba dive together.

Next to Niijima is Shikinejima, renowned for its natural hot springs and swimming. In particular, there are onsens which are fed directly by the ocean. During high tide, the springs are inaccessible, but when the tide moves out, you are presented with a beautiful view of the ocean and your own private bath. These seaside hot springs are free and open to the public, and luckily or unluckily for you, a swimsuit is required.

If you prefer to stay active, the island is also host to many great swimming locations even for beginners with calmer waters featured at several beaches. Serviced campsites also dot the map where you can enjoy a true Japanese style outdoor barbecue.

South of Shikinejima is Kouzushima, where you can find the Alps like mountain Tenjousan, meaning literally “mountain above the heavens”. The climb to the top of the mountain is an adventure across various microclimates from deserts, to ponds and forests. When you reach the top, you’ll be treated to the beautiful view that’s worth of the mountains namesake.

If your mood doesn’t strike you for a climb, you can also do the exact opposite. The island also happens to be a top spot for diving – Kouzushima is a place where both the land and sea can be enjoyed to the fullest extent.

At the center of Tokyoislands is Miyakejima, the site of a large volcanic eruption in 2000.

The resulting landscape from the eruption is enjoyably dynamic and the island now features a promenade over the old lava flow allowing for a first hand experience into the powerful forces of nature. Miyakejima is also home to the largest lake in the Tokyoislands formed from a larger eruption 2000 years ago.

Mikurajima, an island just south of Miyakejima is known around the world as one of the best places to go swimming with wild dolphins, attracting visitors both local and global.

Apart from dolphins, the island is also host to a mystical and wonderful primeval forest that sits right at home with the areas rainy climate.

Find your perfect island from the many that exist!
